PHALAENOPSIS

Phalaenopsis orchids are some of the most readily available orchids in the world today. Their beautiful, simple foliage, along with their arching displays of many flowers make them popular with all flower coinsurers. Care of these delightful plants is straightforward, since they enjoy conditions similar to the ones we as humans love.

LIGHT: East facing windows are great places for your phals. Western and southern windows are second choices—place your phals a bit further back from the window if you chose these locations. This will prevent sunburn.

TEMPERATURE: Phals like temperatures much like we enjoy—60 to 85 degrees. To initiate spiking, a 20 degree drop in temperature is necessary. About a week of lower evening temperatures will do the trick.

HUMIDITY and AIR movement: Phals would prefer 50% humidity, which can be difficult to provide in your home. We encourage the use of humidity trays to boost the percentage of humidity around the plants. Humidity trays consist of a water holding tray, 1” of rocks or pebbles and a water level that does not allow the plants to sit in the water. Phals also appreciate a breeze. A small fan to circulate the air will suit them nicely.

FERTILIZER: Phals do not live by water alone. We recommend the weakly weekly routine with a balanced fertilizer (one where all three numbers on the fertilizer bottle are nearly equal). Use the food one-half strength in the summer and one quarter strength in the winter.

REPOTTING: Phals appreciate being potted in large bark, with charcoal and large perlite to sweeten and open the mix. (We do have all of these items for sale!) Phals should be repotted at least every other year, when the plants are showing signs of growth. Look for new leaves and roots before you take on the repotting task.
