Phragmipediums are gaining popularity in recent years since the vibrant Phrag. besseae species has been discovered. The plants are easy to grow, and their exotic flowers are numerous and long lasting.
LIGHT: Phragmipediums require bright light to bloom well. The proper light level ranges from 2,000-2,500 foot candles, except for Phrag. besseae, which requires lower light. Leaves should be a medium green in color.
TEMPERATURE: Phragmipediums are intermediate growers and enjoy a temperature range between 55-85 degrees F. Higher temperatures can be tolerated if accompanied by increased humidity and decreased light levels.
WATER: Phragmipediums need to be kept constantly moist in order to grow and bloom well. They are intolerant of dry periods. Some growers have been known to set their plants in saucers filled with an inch of water. Do not attempt this unless you are an experienced grower because you can end up with rotted roots. Water, which is lodged inside the leaves, will easily lead to rot, fungal, and bacterial problems.
HUMIDITY: Phragmipediums need humidity between 40% and 70. Humidity can be increased by frequent misting.
FERTILIZER: Phragmipediums are not heavy feeders. Fertilizer should be applied at ¼ strength every 2 weeks. If your plants exhibit leaf tip burn, withhold fertilizer for about a month. Flush with plain water once a month to leach out unwanted salts.
POTTING: Repot Phragmipediums after they are finished blooming; phrags should be repotted annually. A standard mix is 1/3 bark, 1/3 perlite, and 1/3 charcoal.
